![]() ![]() I mostly like it for the story, and for its world- it's always felt different from a lot of other JRPG settings, with a more spiritual feel overall. ![]() Legend of Legaia is has turn-based combat based around martial arts combos- the moves of which you input ahead of time, so there's no button mashing- and magic based around absorbing certain enemies by defeating them. It's got a nice sense of humor and a light tone, but still has a lot of heart. something, called Baby, and he fights monsters and fulfills his destiny and such. You play as a knight, named Knight, who rescued a baby. Guardian's Crusade is a short, simple, almost archetypal console RPG. The mainline SMT games (Nocturne, DDS 1 & 2) are more limited in appeal. I generally refer to the entire line unless I mention specific games as marginal or to avoid. Suikoden (except 4), Dragon Quest, Shadow Hearts, the Aetlier games & the Mana Khemia spinoff, Ar Tonelico, the early Wild Arms games (quality slides as you progress, IMO), Valkyrie Profile, Breath of Fire, Persona, and Star Ocean (early games) are all solid. Heritage has one of the biggest bastards I've ever seen in the villain seat, although it also has a pretty bizarre character advancement system. Growlanser 1 has a very heavily branching storyline that ranges from 'Save the World' to 'Conquer the World' to 'Conquer the World with mind control' with relatively little overlap. ![]() ![]() All those spells that rarely see the light of day in other RPGs are important here. Rescues, retrievals, defensive lines, chases, fighting retreats, and more. They are gridless tactical games, but unlike most tactical RPGs many battles have objectives other than 'kill everything else'. Growlanser: Heritage of War & Growlanser Generations. ![]()
